This tutorial shows how to install TWRP Recovery and Root LG G4 Android Smartphone – Guide
Earlier we have shared a tutorial on how to unlock Bootloader on LG G4 Android Smartphone and today we are going to show you how to install TWRP Recovery on LG G4 and Root it. First of all make sure you have unlocked the Bootloader on LG G4, if you haven’t then you can follow the steps listed here and get it unlocked. Once you have unlocked the Bootloader on LG G4 you are all set to follow the steps listed in this tutorial.
Before we proceed with the installation and rooting process, we must get LG G4 and PC ready for the process and this can be done by following the instructions listed below.
Getting Prepared:
- Make sure LG G4 is at least charged to 80-85% as we don’t want it to die in between the process.
- Backup all of your important stuff to PC.

Backup and Restore Call Logs
Backup files on internal storage to PC
- Ensure that USB Debugging is enabled on LG G4. If it’s not, then enable it from Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging. If Developer Options is not located under Settings, then enable it by following the guide here.
- Prepare your PC by installing all the necessary LG USB Drivers.
- Install and setup ADB and Fastboot drivers on PC.

How to Install TWRP Recovery on LG G4:
Step 1: Download the TWRP Recovery image file for your device from the download section and make sure it is in .img format. If it is not, then extract it.
Step 2: Rename the image file to recovery.img and copy it to fastboot folder.
Step 3: Open the CMD inside the Fastboot folder by pressing and holding the shift key and right clicking inside the Fastboot folder and selecting open command window here.
Step 4: Connect LG G4 to PC and wait till all the drivers are installed.
Step 5: Now in CMD type the following commands and hit enter after each command.
adb reboot bootloader
This command will reboot LG G4 into Bootloader Mode, from where we can flash or boot the twrp recovery image file using the commands listed below:
If you want to temporarily boot into TWRP Recovery then you can use the below command:
fastboot boot recovery.img
If you want to permanently flash the recovery then use the following command:
fastboot flash recovery.img
Finally reboot your device by issuing the command:
fastboot reboot
Congratulations! Now you have TWRP Custom Recovery on LG G4. Now it’s time to Root LG G4 using the SuperSU package.
How to Root LG G4:
Step 1: Download the SuperSU package from here.
Step 2: Copy the package to devices internal storage or SD card, but make sure not to copy it inside the any folder, just copy it at the root of the internal storage or SD card.
Step 3: Boot LG G4 into Recovery Mode.
- Power off LG G4.
- Press and hold Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneously until you see the LG logo.
- When you see the LG logo, release the keys and after one second hold them again until you are booted into Recovery Mode.
Step 4: Follow the steps listed here and install the SuperSU package on LG G4.
Step 5: Reboot and check for root permissions using Root Checker App.
