How to Install TWRP Recovery and Root Lenovo ZUK Z1

This guide lists all the steps on how to install TWRP Recovery and Root Lenovo ZUK Z1

Lenovo ZUK Z1, the latest Cyanogen powered Smartphone from Lenovo can now be rooted and installed with TWRP Custom Recovery. Earlier we have shared a tutorial on how to unlock bootloader on Lenovo ZUK Z1 and it should be followed in order to proceed with the installation of TWRP Recovery and rooting process. So before proceeding with this tutorial follow the instructions listed here and unlock bootloader on Lenovo ZUK Z1 and then proceed to install TWRP Recovery and Root Lenovo ZUK Z1.

This method is only for Lenovo ZUK Z1 and should not be done on other devices.

Early Preparations:

1. Backup all the data stored on your device to PC – SMS, Contacts, Call Logs etc.
2. Enable USB Debugging on Lenovo ZUK Z1.
3. Charge the device to at least 75%.
4. Unlock Bootloader on Lenovo ZUK Z1.
5. Install Lenovo USB Drivers on PC.
6. Setup ADB and Fastboot drivers on PC – Windows | Mac

How to install TWRP Recovery on Lenovo ZUK Z1:

Step 1: Download the TWRP Recovery from the above downloads section and rename it to recovery.img

Step 2: Copy recovery.img to Fastboot folder and press and hold the shift key and right click inside the folder at the empty space and choose open command window here.

Step 3: Connect Lenovo ZUK Z1 to PC using appropriate USB cable.

Step 4: Now in CMD type the below commands to install TWRP Recovery on Lenovo ZUK Z1

adb devices

This command lists the devices connected to PC with USB Debugging enabled. If asked to authorize PC to use USB Debugging, just tap allow.

adb reboot bootloader

This command boots Lenovo ZUK Z1 into Fastboot Mode.

Step 5: Once the device boots into Fastboot Mode enter the below commands

fastboot -i 0x2b4c flash recovery recovery.img

This command flashes the recovery.img (In our case TWRP Recovery) file to Lenovo ZUK Z1.

fastboot reboot

This command reboots the device into normal mode.

With this, we are done with the installation of TWRP Recovery on Lenovo ZUK Z1. Now it’s time to Root Lenovo ZUK Z1.

How to Root Lenovo ZUK Z1:

Step 1: Download the KingRoot app from the above downloads section.

Step 2: Transfer it to your device’s internal or external storage.

Step 3: Install KingRoot app with the help of ES File Explorer or similar File Manager.

Step 4: Open KingRoot from App drawer.

Step 5: Click on ROOT and follow the onscreen instructions.

Step 6: Reboot the device.

Step 7: Check Root permissions using Root Checker App.
